In a significant development, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, announced the successful rescue of 22 students and staff members from the Federal University of Gusau, Zamfara State, who were abducted on September 22, 2023. After enduring seven months in captivity, these individuals were safely recovered through a coordinated operation led by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC).

The abduction occurred in the early hours of September 22 when armed bandits attacked off-campus hostels in Sabon Gida Village, kidnapping a total of 30 individuals. Following extensive search and rescue operations, 15 students and seven university staff members were successfully freed on March 15, April 12, and April 14, 2024. The NSA confirmed that no ransom was paid for their release.

"This operation marks a pivotal moment in our ongoing efforts to combat the menace of kidnapping and ensure the safety of our citizens," stated Ribadu during a reception for the rescued individuals in Abuja. "We are committed to ridding Nigeria of these heinous crimes and will continue to strengthen our security measures across vulnerable communities."

The rescued victims underwent thorough medical assessments upon their return. The NSA reported that all individuals were found to be in stable condition, with minor injuries treated and no reports of sexual assault among female victims.

Ribadu expressed gratitude to the security agencies involved in the operation, commending their dedication and professionalism. He also thanked the families of the victims for their patience during this challenging period. "Your resilience has been remarkable," he said.

The Nigerian government remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing security measures throughout the country. The NSA urged citizens to report any suspicious activities that could compromise safety and security.

As part of ongoing efforts to address insecurity in Zamfara State and beyond, Ribadu reiterated that "no stone will be left unturned" in ensuring a safe environment for all Nigerians.
