Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to alleviate the economic hardship currently affecting Nigerians. During a press briefing at the National Assembly, Senator Kalu emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need for swift measures to provide relief to the populace.
Senator Kalu highlighted the increasing suffering among Nigerians, attributing the hardship to recent economic reforms, including the removal of the fuel subsidy. While acknowledging the boldness of President Tinubu’s reforms, he stressed the necessity of reconsidering some decisions to mitigate their impact on the people.
“The hardship is real; people are suffering,” said Senator Kalu. “We manage about 10,000 workers in our group, and ensuring they are paid in this difficult time is a challenge. Everyone must be able to eat in this time of hardship.”
He commended President Tinubu’s courage in implementing economic reforms but urged for quicker relief measures. “No president in the last 60 years has dared to do what President Tinubu is doing to reform the economy. But we need to bring succour to Nigerians immediately. He has to act today, not tomorrow, because the situation is dire,” Kalu remarked.
Senator Kalu also suggested that the return of the fuel subsidy could be reconsidered. “I’m not in the economic team; I have not seen the president or anyone to ask, but this is what the president has to sit with his economic team to discuss,” he added.
In closing, Senator Kalu reiterated his commitment to supporting measures that would alleviate the economic challenges faced by Nigerians and called on all stakeholders to work together towards a more stable and prosperous Nigeria.
