In the academic session of 2007/2008, I was in SSS 1 in one of the greatest institutions of learning in Kanuri Land. The social activities of the school ranges from culture, debates, quizzes, and a lot more.
Many students engaged themselves in one or two of the social activities and they were wonderfully doing well in those areas.
Interestingly, I had never once participated in any of the activities, my major duty was to cheer up the students representing my class. I thought in my mind that I too can also do better if I had the opportunity to join any of this group. However, I was not ready to join because of the fear of not being mocked by the female students due to the bad grammar that might come out of my mouth.
The academic session passed by and we all departed to our various homes for the Christmas holiday, which was also the period my church often organizes her December Retreat, where everyone from different localities will combine for this special program.
During one of the youth sessions, a debate was organized and some students were introduced to represent their district. Their performances were outstanding and this gave me the inspiration that I too can do so far better.
We all resumed back to school after our December holiday and the major activities began. I told myself that I need to do away with procrastination and I must partake in this academic session debate. I summoned the courage to meet the Social Prefect Coordinator that I would love to be a member of the school debate club. She was so happy and I was welcomed to the debate club.
A few weeks later, I was tasked to represent my class against our immediate seniors. I went home with the topic for a proper rehearsal for days and I stood in front of my siblings to demonstrate my body language and be outspoken before the day of the debate.
The awaited day arrived, and the hall was set for the debate. Every participant was called on to the special seat arranged for them at the front roll so that the audience could see them.
The debate began properly and the chief speakers of both sides made their points and were applauded. It was time for me to speak, I collected the microphone and breathed in. I stood on the existing protocol and I made out my points with no iota of fear, my body language gave the panel a clear impression that my class had already won the competition. The students of my class rose and began to shout and jubilate even when the result was yet to be announced.
Finally, the result of the debate was announced and my class won by a wide margin to defeat SSS 2 class. I later participated in different debate competitions outside the school and this brought me to the limelight. A Non-Governmental Organization heard about my outstanding performance and I was awarded a scholarship.
I was able to bid procrastination farewell from the impression I got at the December Retreat.
