A stirring statement has emerged from the grandson of former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari, expressing deep disappointment over the contrasting responses to the deaths of two Nigerian leaders by political figures.
In a recent interview, the grandson highlighted how Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s current president, publicly honoured former President Muhammadu Buhari upon his passing. Tinubu’s tribute was widely regarded as respectful and heartfelt, reflecting a tradition of recognising the contributions of past leaders.
However, the grandson lamented that when Shehu Shagari, Nigeria’s first executive president, passed away, Buhari himself did not offer any public recognition or tribute. This perceived snub has sparked renewed discussions about respect, legacy, and political decorum in Nigeria.
Speaking emotionally, the grandson said, “It pains me that my grandfather’s death was met with silence by those who now demand respect for their own. When Shagari passed, Buhari did not acknowledge his legacy publicly. Yet, today, we see Tinubu honouring Buhari with dignity and respect in his death. This inconsistency is deeply hurtful to our family and to many Nigerians who value our history.”
Shehu Shagari served as Nigeria’s president from 1979 to 1983, a period marked by efforts to consolidate democracy in the country. Despite challenges, his administration remains a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
This contrast in responses has raised questions about political rivalries and how they affect the commemoration of national figures. Analysts argue that honouring past leaders, regardless of political differences, is crucial for national unity and historical respect.
