In a move to alleviate poverty and restore hope among disadvantaged communities, the Ondo State Government has officially launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering widows and other vulnerable individuals across the state.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, speaking during the unveiling ceremony held at the state capital, described the initiative as a “lifeline” to thousands of widows, single mothers, and economically disenfranchised citizens. The program, tagged "Ondo Cares: Empowerment for Dignity," will provide beneficiaries with access to vocational training, seed funding for small businesses, financial literacy workshops, and monthly support stipends.

“We cannot call ourselves a progressive society if we leave our widows and vulnerable behind,” the Governor said. “This initiative is more than policy—it’s a moral responsibility to rebuild lives and provide real economic opportunities.”

The program is being implemented through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in partnership with various local NGOs and international development partners. Phase one will target over 5,000 widows and low-income households in all 18 local government areas, with future phases set to expand the reach to unemployed youth and persons living with disabilities.

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Kehinde Omole, emphasized the holistic nature of the program, noting that it will include emotional support services and community-building platforms alongside financial and material aid. “Empowerment goes beyond handouts. We are giving people the tools, knowledge, and confidence to stand tall again,” she said.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude at the launch event, with many describing the initiative as timely and transformative. “This gives me hope that I can start my tailoring business and take care of my children,” said Mrs. Funmilayo Adeoye, a widow from Okitipupa.
