The remains of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, arrived in Katsina State today amid an outpouring of emotion and reflection on the legacy of a man who once led Africa’s most populous nation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and an array of top political leaders, traditional rulers, and dignitaries gathered at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport to receive the body before its final journey to Buhari’s hometown of Daura, where he will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.

A solemn military honor guard stood in place as the coffin, draped in the national colors, was lowered from the plane. The atmosphere was heavy with both reverence and remembrance, as mourners and officials reflected on the decades-long influence of the late leader.

“Today, we mourn not only a former president but a patriot whose life was defined by service, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to Nigeria,” President Tinubu said in a brief address at the tarmac. “His journey from the battlefield to the presidency was a testament to his deep love for this nation.”

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and returned as a democratically elected President in 2015 until 2023, was known for his anti-corruption stance, his military background, and his often polarizing leadership style. He passed away on Monday in London after a prolonged illness.

As the convoy departed for Daura, thousands of locals lined parts of the road, some waving flags, others silently watching as a chapter in Nigeria’s political history closed.

The burial ceremony in Daura is expected to be attended by family, religious leaders, and close associates. Security has been tightened in the town and surrounding areas to ensure a smooth and dignified farewell.
