Amnesty International Nigeria has issued a scathing statement following the brutal killing of 27 residents in Bindi-Jebbu, a village in the Tahoss community of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State. The organization described the attack as a “horrific and shameful display of government failure to protect lives,” and called into question the effectiveness of President Bola Tinubu’s repeated directives to security agencies.

According to eyewitness accounts and Amnesty’s field investigation, entire families were locked inside their homes and slaughtered, while those attempting to flee were gunned down. The international human rights group emphasized that this latest massacre is part of a disturbing pattern of violence targeting farming communities in Plateau State.

“President Bola Tinubu claims repeatedly to have ‘tasked’ security agencies to end the killings, but the mounting death toll clearly tells a different story,” Amnesty Nigeria stated on Wednesday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The organization also warned that government inaction is deepening insecurity and eroding public trust. “The Nigerian authorities have an obligation to protect the people. The rising death toll and increasing impunity by gunmen show just how badly the authorities are failing in this responsibility,” the statement concluded.

This tragedy adds to the over 2,630 deaths in Plateau State since President Tinubu took office, according to Amnesty’s recent report, which also revealed that more than 10,217 Nigerians have been killed nationwide in attacks by armed groups over the past two years.
