At the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a powerful call for climate justice, urging the international community to recognize Africa’s disproportionate burden in the global climate crisis despite its minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

Speaking before leaders of the Global South and emerging economies, President Tinubu declared, “Africa has contributed the least to global emissions but suffers the most,” highlighting the urgent need for a fairer and more inclusive global climate framework.

Nigeria, which officially became a BRICS partner country in January 2025, used its debut appearance at the summit to advocate for a reevaluation of global governance, financial systems, and healthcare structures. President Tinubu emphasized that environmental degradation, climate change, and healthcare inequalities are shared global challenges that demand collective action.

President Tinubu also spotlighted Africa’s proactive initiatives, including the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall, as examples of the continent’s commitment to climate resilience. He urged the BRICS bloc to become a beacon for global solutions rooted in fairness, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

“As we approach COP-30, BRICS must not only be an economic bloc but a platform for solidarity and climate leadership,” he stated.

Accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar and Minister of Finance Wale Edun, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to accelerating renewable energy adoption, promoting nature-based solutions, and strengthening urban resilience.

With over 70% of Nigeria’s population under the age of 30, the President stressed the importance of building a future that addresses the aspirations of youth and ensures inclusive development.
