The newly appointed Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has declared the party’s commitment to adopting international best practices in political organization, ethics, and governance, drawing inspiration from countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Sweden, and Chile.
Speaking at the National Opposition Coalition meeting held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Aregbesola emphasized that the coalition’s mission is to build a political institution rooted in democratic values, internal transparency, and people-centered governance. The coalition, which recently adopted the ADC as its official platform, aims to challenge the status quo and redefine Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We will study what works from South Africa to Sweden, from Chile to Kenya, and adapt what fits our local reality,” Aregbesola stated. “Discipline, order, clarity of purpose, and service to the people must define us.”
Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior and two-term Governor of Osun State, outlined a bold vision for the ADC, promising to transform it into a party where internal democracy is practiced, not just preached, and where marginalized groups—youth, women, professionals, and people with special needs—have real influence within autonomous party structures.
The coalition includes prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and David Mark, who was named the party’s interim national chairman. Together, they aim to present a unified and ideologically grounded alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
