A broad coalition of civil society organizations, grassroots movements, and concerned citizens has announced plans for a nationwide peaceful protest to take place on August 1, 2025, in response to escalating economic hardship, growing insecurity, and widespread political suppression.
Operating under the banner “Voice of the People Now”, the group says the protest aims to draw urgent national and international attention to what it describes as “the deepening suffering of ordinary Nigerians” amidst inflation, rising unemployment, and the deteriorating security situation across many parts of the country.
“Millions of families are being crushed under the weight of skyrocketing living costs while governance remains unresponsive. Citizens can no longer afford silence. This protest is a call for accountability and reform,” said spokesperson Halima Bako at a press briefing in Abuja.
The group emphasized that the protest is non-partisan and open to all Nigerians regardless of affiliation. Organizers say marches and rallies will be held simultaneously in major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano.
