In a controversial development that has sparked widespread concern, retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Joseph Mbu has allegedly ordered the detention of several police inspectors in Cross River State, following his unilateral decision to lock up a community townhall in the region.

Eyewitnesses and local leaders report that Mbu, who has no current official role in the Nigerian Police Force, used his influence to direct the arbitrary closure of the townhall—an essential public facility in the community—without consultation or legal basis. The move reportedly occurred during a community dispute, in which Mbu is said to have taken sides.

According to sources within the state police command, when some inspectors questioned the legality of Mbu's actions and resisted carrying out the order, they were detained under his directive. This has raised serious questions about abuse of power and the overreach of retired security officials in civilian matters.

“We are deeply troubled by this incident,” said a representative of the Cross River Civil Society Coalition. “Retired officers do not have authority over active-duty police personnel or public property. The detention of these inspectors must be investigated, and the rule of law upheld.”
