The Ondo State Government is under mounting scrutiny following the Governor's approval of a controversial N8.2 billion allocation for the construction of 32 luxury residences for cabinet members. This decision comes despite the current administration having appointed only two commissioners since assuming office and amid growing insecurity across the state.
The luxury housing project, greenlit earlier this week, has sparked outrage among citizens, civil society groups, and political observers, who describe the move as “extravagant” and “poorly timed” in light of the state's pressing socio-economic and security challenges.
Currently, communities across Ondo State are grappling with a spate of violent attacks, kidnappings, and farmer-herder clashes, leaving residents fearful and calling for urgent government intervention and visible leadership. Critics argue that the N8.2 billion earmarked for cabinet housing could be better utilized to bolster the state’s security infrastructure, improve public services, or address widespread poverty.
“This is an administration that has only managed to appoint two commissioners, yet finds it prudent to commit over N8 billion to luxury homes,” said [Name], Executive Director of the Ondo Civil Society Watch. “It sends a clear message that the welfare of the elite is being prioritized over the safety and livelihood of ordinary citizens.”
The governor’s office defended the expenditure in a brief statement, arguing that the new residences are part of a “long-term infrastructure plan to provide conducive work environments for top officials.” However, the explanation has done little to quell public anger.
The opposition party in the state assembly has demanded an immediate suspension of the project and called for an emergency session to address what it describes as “gross fiscal irresponsibility.”
