In a landmark decision aimed at fostering stronger bilateral trade relations, Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced the suspension of all tariffs on goods imported from the United States. This move comes in response to recent tariff measures introduced by US President Donald Trump, which included an 18% duty on Zimbabwean exports.

President Mnangagwa stated, "In the spirit of constructing a mutually beneficial and positive relationship with the United States of America, I will direct the Zimbabwean government to implement a suspension of all tariffs levied on goods originating from the United States. This measure is intended to facilitate the expansion of American imports within the Zimbabwean market, while simultaneously promoting the growth of Zimbabwean exports destined for the United States."

The suspension of tariffs is expected to enhance trade between the two nations, which amounted to $111.6 million in 2024. Zimbabwe's exports to the US primarily include tobacco, sugar, and ferroalloys, while imports from the US have been limited due to existing tariffs. This decision underscores Zimbabwe's commitment to equitable trade and enhanced bilateral cooperation.

While the move has been praised for its potential to strengthen economic ties, some critics have raised concerns about its implications for regional economic cooperation within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Prominent journalist and activist Hopewell Chin'ono described the decision as a "knee-jerk reaction," suggesting it may be an effort to address longstanding US sanctions on Zimbabwe.
