A massive power outage has struck Spain and Portugal, plunging major cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Lisbon into darkness. The blackout, which began around midday local time, has disrupted transportation networks, affected businesses, and left millions without electricity.

Spain’s electricity grid operator, Red Electrica, confirmed widespread outages and stated that all available resources are being deployed to restore power. In Portugal, E-Redes is working to reestablish connections in phases, acknowledging the scale of the disruption.

The blackout has caused chaos in transportation, with Madrid’s underground network being evacuated and train services halted across Spain. Airports in Madrid and Barcelona have also reported disruptions, with flights delayed due to the outage.

Authorities in both countries are investigating the cause of the blackout, with some officials suggesting the possibility of a cyberattack. Spain’s National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) and the Portuguese government are actively assessing whether malicious activity played a role in the incident.
