In a powerful message to the newly admitted students, the Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has urged all freshers to speak up and report any form of harassment they may experience on campus. The call, made during the orientation program for new students, aims to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello emphasized that harassment, whether physical, emotional, or sexual, will not be tolerated within the university community. She reiterated the university’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment where students can thrive academically and socially without fear of discrimination or harm.

“The university is your home away from home, and we are committed to ensuring your safety and well-being,” said the Vice Chancellor. “Don’t keep silent when you are harassed. Speak up, report the incident, and we will take immediate action to address it. Every student has the right to feel safe and respected.”

In her address, Prof. Olatunji-Bello highlighted the establishment of a robust support system that includes counseling services, a dedicated harassment reporting channel, and a campus security team trained to handle such issues with sensitivity and urgency. She also encouraged students to familiarize themselves with these resources, ensuring they know where to turn should they ever feel threatened or unsafe.

The Vice Chancellor also encouraged students to foster a culture of respect, unity, and understanding among themselves. She stressed the importance of creating a campus environment where harassment is not only reported but actively prevented through mutual respect and personal responsibility.

“We must work together to build a university community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” she added.
