A Sydney homeowner in Horsley Park got a shock when a snake catcher unearthed 102 snakes from his backyard mulch pile. David Stein initially spotted a few snakes and called Reptile Relocation Sydney for assistance.
Snake catcher Dylan Cooper from Reptile Relocation Sydney discovered five adult red-bellied black snakes and 97 newborns. Red-bellied black snakes are venomous, and the females often gather to give birth. According to Reptile Relocation Sydney owner Cory Kerewaro, it is unusual to witness the collective birth of so many snakes.
Stein had noticed the snakes in areas where he had put down mulch to keep his trees healthy. He initially thought there were only about six snakes. His wife researched the species and learned that the females often congregate when they're about to give birth, prompting the call to Reptile Relocation Sydney.
Kerewaro said Stein called at an opportune moment, as the snakes were about to disperse around the neighborhood. One of the pregnant females even gave birth to more snakes inside the removal bag. It took Cooper about three hours to remove all of the snakes.
Stein said it was exciting to watch the whole thing, and he is glad they are gone. Kerewaro confirmed that the snakes would be relocated to a national park.
Kerewaro emphasized the importance of being "snake aware," noting that mulch piles can create ideal conditions for snakes to nest due to the stable temperature. He also advised that if you encounter snakes, do not approach them but instead call a professional snake catcher for advice and removal.
