In a pressing address during the 2025 annual inter-faith service for workers held at the Secretariat, Agodi, Governor Seyi Makinde raised an urgent alarm regarding the alarming influx of bandits into Oyo State. The governor revealed that these criminals are fleeing military operations in the North-West and have established camps alarmingly close to residential areas.
Governor Makinde stated, “During my recent birthday retreat in Fashola, I discovered that bandits had camped less than two kilometres from where I was staying. This underscores the seriousness of the situation we are facing.” He emphasized that these developments are not merely anecdotal but indicative of a broader security challenge that threatens the safety of Oyo State residents.
The governor highlighted that 2024 was particularly challenging in terms of safety and security, citing incidents of armed robbery, kidnappings, and fire outbreaks. He vowed to intensify efforts in 2025 to combat these issues decisively. “We will not rest until every inch of Oyo State is free from bandits and wrongdoers,” he declared.
Makinde urged traditional rulers and residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities. “This is no joke. It’s a serious issue,” he stressed. He called upon all stakeholders in the state to collaborate in ensuring a secure environment, stating that “nothing meaningful can happen in an atmosphere of insecurity.”
In addition to addressing security concerns, Governor Makinde reiterated his commitment to justice following the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, which claimed the lives of 35 children last December. He assured that those responsible would face trial, emphasizing that Oyo State would uphold the rule of law regardless of external influences.
