African youth leaders are calling for immediate action and innovative solutions to address the growing crisis of climate induced displacement across the continent. As extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and desertification accelerate, millions of young Africans are facing increasing risks of displacement, with profound socio-economic and environmental consequences.
A new generation of climate advocates is speaking out, demanding urgent investments in climate resilience, mobility infrastructure, and sustainable development. With Africa being one of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change, young people are leading the charge for solutions that prioritize both environmental protection and human rights.
"Youth in Africa are not only at the forefront of the climate crisis, but we are also experiencing its devastating effects firsthand," said Amara Toure, a youth climate activist from Senegal. "As climate-related disasters displace entire communities, we need more than just adaptation strategies we need tangible mobility solutions that ensure safe, dignified, and sustainable movement for those affected."
According to the latest reports from the United Nations, Africa is projected to experience some of the most severe consequences of climate change, with an estimated 30 million people across the continent facing displacement by 2030. From the Sahel region to the coastal zones of East Africa, young people are becoming increasingly concerned about their future, livelihoods, and right to remain in their communities.
The urgency of this crisis has led youth-led organizations, climate NGOs, and grassroots movements to call for the development of effective policies that integrate climate mobility as a key component of climate action. The need for enhanced collaboration between governments, international organizations, and young climate leaders is critical to addressing this growing challenge.
"The solutions we need must be holistic," said Amina Juma, a climate justice advocate from Kenya. "It’s not just about reducing emissions or providing emergency aid. We must also invest in long-term solutions like sustainable agriculture, affordable housing, education, and access to employment for displaced communities, especially young people."
