The Ogun State Government is under increasing scrutiny as reports emerge that local government election staff have not received their compensation two weeks after the elections held on November 16, 2024. This delay has raised concerns among workers and stakeholders regarding the state’s commitment to upholding the rights of its employees and ensuring smooth electoral processes.

Despite assurances from state officials prior to the elections, many ad hoc staff members who facilitated the electoral process have yet to be paid. This situation has led to frustration and uncertainty among those who dedicated their time and effort to ensure a fair electoral process.

The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) had previously stated its commitment to conducting free and credible elections, yet the failure to disburse payments has cast doubt on this promise. Election staff, including polling officers and clerks, are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, and their lack of compensation undermines public confidence in the system.

Bayo Adefesobi, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Ogun State, expressed concern over the situation. “We are in constant engagement with the state government regarding these payments. It is vital that our members are compensated promptly for their services during the elections,” he stated.

The Federal Government has indicated it will take action against states that fail to conduct local government elections in accordance with legal requirements. With Ogun among several states facing scrutiny for delayed elections, there are fears that continued non-payment could lead to broader implications for local governance and funding.
