Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eli Cohen, has expressed sharp criticism of Pope Francis following his recent remarks about the ongoing violence in Gaza, labeling the situation as genocide. Minister Cohen condemned the Pope’s statement as misleading and irresponsible, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

In an address to the media, Minister Cohen stated, “The Pope’s comments are not only deeply troubling, but they also serve to fuel the already dangerous rhetoric surrounding this conflict. The term 'genocide' is both inappropriate and inflammatory, especially when used in the context of a war that has been initiated and perpetuated by a terrorist organization, Hamas, that uses civilians as shields and targets innocent people indiscriminately.”

The Vatican has been vocal in its calls for peace and humanitarian aid in Gaza, with Pope Francis urging for an end to the bloodshed and a renewed focus on protecting civilian lives. However, the Israeli government has consistently maintained that the military actions in Gaza are a direct response to the brutal terror attacks launched by Hamas, which killed over 1,400 Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023. Israel has repeatedly emphasized that its operations are aimed at neutralizing the Hamas leadership and dismantling its military infrastructure.

Minister Cohen continued, “Israel's actions are guided by the need to protect its citizens from a genocidal terrorist group. The Pope, who has long advocated for peace and dialogue, should recognize the complexity of this conflict and the threat posed by Hamas, rather than resorting to polarizing language that could hinder efforts for peace.”

The criticism follows a series of high-profile statements from global leaders and organizations calling for an end to the violence in Gaza, including concerns over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region. While many have condemned the widespread loss of civilian life, the Israeli government maintains that it is doing everything possible to minimize harm to non-combatants.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with over 20,000 Palestinians reported dead and thousands more injured. International calls for a ceasefire have grown louder, but the conflict shows no sign of abating as Israel continues its military operations.

Israel has called for a broader international recognition of the threat posed by Hamas, which the Israeli government and several other nations label as a terrorist organization. Minister Cohen reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to its security and the protection of its citizens, despite ongoing international criticism.
