In a significant political shift, Chief Barr. Chris Okewulonu, the former Chief of Staff to Emeka Ihedioha, alongside other prominent members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). This notable defection occurred on December 20, 2024, at the Imo APC State Party Secretariat.
The event marks a critical juncture in Imo State's political landscape as several key figures from the PDP, including Rt. Hon. Sir Chuma Nnaji, former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly and Ihedioha’s gubernatorial running mate, have aligned themselves with the ruling party. Their departure is viewed as a response to ongoing internal crises within the PDP and a recognition of the developmental strides made under the APC-led government.
Chief Okewulonu articulated his reasons for leaving the PDP, stating, “Remaining in opposition in the face of such progress is nothing short of wickedness. What are we opposing when the very issues we criticized are being addressed?” His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among party defectors who believe that aligning with the APC is essential for contributing to ongoing development efforts in Imo State.
Governor Hope Uzodimma welcomed the new members into the APC, emphasizing that there would be no restrictions on their participation. He assured them of equal opportunities within the party and highlighted his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development and economic growth.
This wave of defections follows Emeka Ihedioha's resignation from the PDP earlier this month. In his resignation speech, Ihedioha expressed discontent with the direction of the PDP, claiming it could no longer effectively oppose the APC or implement necessary reforms. He stated, “The party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs,” indicating a broader dissatisfaction among party members regarding leadership and direction.
