Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent tax proposals aimed at addressing Nigeria's economic challenges, asserting that increased taxation is not the solution to the country’s economic crisis. Atiku emphasizes that the root causes of the current economic difficulties lie in misguided policies rather than in the citizens' ability to contribute more financially.
In his statement, Atiku said, "It is both unjust and impractical to impose additional financial burdens on Nigerians who are already grappling with high inflation, unemployment, and a cost of living crisis. The economic mess we find ourselves in is a direct result of policies that have failed to address the underlying issues plaguing our economy."
Atiku further urged the government to reconsider its approach, advocating instead for comprehensive economic reforms that prioritize job creation, investment in infrastructure, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises. He believes that fostering an environment conducive to business growth will ultimately yield greater tax revenue without further straining the pockets of ordinary Nigerians.
He continued, "Nigerians deserve a government that prioritizes their welfare and seeks innovative solutions to stimulate growth, rather than resorting to taxes as a quick fix for its own policy failures."
