The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a statement in response to recent comments made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, urging the ex-leader to focus on self-reflection regarding his tenure as both President and Head of State.
In a strongly worded reply, the Tinubu government emphasized that the former president’s continued criticisms of the current administration were misdirected and failed to recognize the progress and reforms the Tinubu government is making to move Nigeria forward.
“The President and his government remain committed to addressing the challenges facing Nigeria and improving the lives of all Nigerians through reforms in the economy, security, and governance. However, it is essential that individuals like former President Obasanjo use their remaining years to reflect deeply on the failures of their own administration, which left a legacy of unfulfilled promises and widespread corruption,” said a statement from the Office of the President.
The statement pointed to several issues during Obasanjo’s leadership, including the management of Nigeria’s oil wealth, inadequate infrastructure development, and lingering socio-economic inequalities. The Tinubu government called on Obasanjo to reconsider his position and to focus on constructive contributions to national discourse rather than undermining the progress the current administration is working hard to achieve.
“We do not seek to engage in a battle of words with our predecessors, but we must state clearly that the era of finger-pointing and blame-shifting is over. Nigerians want to see action, not rhetoric,” the statement continued. “President Tinubu's administration is focused on delivering tangible results through policies that promote economic growth, security, and national unity.”
