The Nigerian government has issued a strong condemnation of the recent mistreatment of the national football team, the Super Eagles, by Libyan authorities. Sports Minister Senator John Enoh expressed deep concern over the incident that occurred at Al Abaq Airport, where the team was reportedly held for over 12 hours upon their arrival in Libya for an international match.

"The actions by the Libyan authorities are deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable," Minister Enoh stated in a press release. He emphasized that holding our national team and officials hostage under any circumstances violates international sporting protocols and the principles of respect and hospitality that should be extended to all visiting teams.

The Super Eagles were in Libya to compete in the return leg of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match after securing a 1-0 victory against Libya in Uyo. However, upon their arrival, logistical confusion led to their flight being diverted, resulting in the team being held at the airport.

"The Nigerian government will not tolerate any form of disrespect or mistreatment toward our players and officials," Enoh affirmed. He reassured Nigerians that the ministry is actively working with the Foreign Affairs Ministry and relevant diplomatic channels to resolve this situation swiftly.

Minister Enoh highlighted that the safety and welfare of the Super Eagles remain the government's top priority. "We are in close contact with the appropriate authorities, and we are sparing no effort to ensure that this situation is resolved swiftly," he added.

He called on Libyan authorities to respect international sporting relations and uphold the fundamental rights of athletes traveling for official purposes. "Sports diplomacy is vital for fostering global unity, but we will not shy away from defending the rights and dignity of our athletes when they are unfairly treated," he stressed.

The minister expressed gratitude to the Nigerian public for their patience and support during this challenging time. He reassured them that every necessary measure is being taken to ensure the safe passage of the Super Eagles to their destination.

As Nigeria prepares for its crucial match against Libya, it remains committed to fostering positive international relations through sports while standing firm against any form of disrespect towards its athletes.
