In a dramatic turn of events following the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have gathered in front of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Benin City to protest the results announced thus far. The protestors allege widespread electoral malpractice and manipulation of results that contradict their own records from polling units.

With results from 16 out of 18 local government areas reported, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed victory in 10 LGAs, while the PDP has secured wins in six. However, PDP supporters are voicing their discontent, asserting that the figures released by INEC do not reflect the actual votes cast by the electorate. Many protestors were seen chanting solidarity songs and carrying leaves as symbols of their grievances.

One protestor, who identified himself as Frank, expressed deep concern over the integrity of the electoral process. “What we are saying is that we will not allow anyone to tamper with the wish of the Edo people. People have voted for our candidate (Dr. Asue Ighodalo), and some people want to use power from above to turn the results upside down. We won’t accept it,” he stated.

The allegations come amidst claims from the PDP that there was suppression of votes in key populous local government areas such as Oredo, Egor, and Ikpoba/Okha. The party has called for immediate intervention from President Bola Tinubu to investigate these claims and ensure that the will of the people is upheld.

The situation escalated when security forces reportedly barred political party agents and observers from accessing the INEC office during the collation process, raising further suspicions about potential manipulation of results. The PDP has urged its supporters to remain vigilant and monitor the ongoing collation process closely.

In response to these developments, INEC officials have reiterated their commitment to a transparent electoral process. Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, confirmed that they would continue with the collation despite ongoing disputes and protests.

The protests highlight a growing tension in Edo State as citizens await a final announcement on the election results. The PDP has vowed to resist any attempts to alter or manipulate the outcomes and has called on all stakeholders to respect the democratic process.
