A coalition of academic and non-academic staff unions has called on Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to match the recent renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan with increased funding and comprehensive institutional reforms. The move comes in response to the governor’s announcement renaming the institution after its late former rector, Dr. Adebayo Falaki.

While the renaming was widely seen as a symbolic gesture honoring Dr. Falaki’s legacy, workers' representatives argue that deep-rooted challenges within the institution require more than symbolic changes.

Speaking under the aegis of the Polytechnic Workers Advancement Forum (PWAF), the group commended the gesture but emphasized the need to address long-standing concerns including: Inadequate infrastructural development, Staff welfare and outstanding salaries, Funding for research and innovation, Updated curricula and learning resources, Improved governance and autonomy

“We appreciate the governor’s recognition of our former leader’s impact,” said PWAF spokesperson, Mrs. Funke Ajadi. “But the soul of the polytechnic lies in its functionality. Without real investment and reform, a name change won’t address the systemic problems plaguing this institution.”

The group also called on relevant federal and state education agencies to ensure that tertiary institutions across Nigeria benefit from sustainable policies that support technical and vocational education. They urged stakeholders to see the renaming as a launchpad for broader transformation rather than an isolated event.

PWAF members plan to engage with the state government through formal channels and have announced plans for a policy dialogue with other key actors in the education sector.
