In a significant political breakthrough, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has successfully brokered peace between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, following months of political tension and division in the oil-rich state.
The reconciliation meeting, held Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, brought together key stakeholders including members of the suspended Rivers State House of Assembly. The closed-door session culminated in a joint commitment by both leaders to put aside their differences and work collaboratively for the progress of Rivers State.
Speaking after the meeting, Wike emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor has also agreed to work with all of us. We are members of the same political family... everything is over.”
Governor Fubara echoed the sentiment, expressing gratitude for the President’s intervention and highlighting the need for peace as a foundation for development. “What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, with the help of Mr. President and the agreement of the leaders of the state, peace has returned in Rivers State,” he said.
This marks the second major attempt by President Tinubu to resolve the political crisis that has gripped Rivers State since 2023. The previous truce collapsed, leading to a state of emergency declaration in March 2025 and the suspension of the governor, his deputy, and the entire state assembly.
