In his first public address since the ceasefire that ended the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described Iran’s retaliatory strike on the U.S. Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar as a “heavy slap” to the face of the United States.
Speaking in a televised broadcast, Khamenei stated, “The Islamic Republic delivered a heavy slap to the U.S.’s face. It attacked and inflicted damage on the Al-Udeid Air Base, which is one of the key U.S. bases in the region.” He emphasized Iran’s strategic reach, warning that “such an action can be repeated in the future too. Should any aggression occur, the enemy will definitely pay a heavy price.”
The remarks come amid heightened tensions following the U.S.’s direct intervention in the Iran-Israel conflict. Khamenei accused Washington of entering the war to prevent the “complete destruction” of Israel, asserting that the U.S. “achieved nothing” through its military campaign.
While U.S. officials have claimed significant damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, Khamenei dismissed these assertions as “exaggerated,” maintaining that Iran’s core capabilities remain intact.
The Supreme Leader’s comments have sparked renewed debate over the effectiveness of recent military actions and the future of U.S.-Iran relations. President Donald Trump has announced that preliminary talks with Iranian officials may take place next week, though Tehran has not confirmed any such engagement.
This statement marks Khamenei’s return to public discourse after remaining in a secure location during the height of the conflict. His message signals a defiant posture and underscores Iran’s intent to assert its regional influence amid ongoing geopolitical volatility.
