The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia have formally agreed to establish diplomatic relations, marking a new chapter of cooperation, dialogue, and mutual respect between the two nations.
A joint communiqué was signed today by representatives of both countries at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. The agreement signals both nations’ shared commitment to strengthening ties based on shared values, common interests, and mutual development goals.
Speaking at the signing, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Emeka Osakwe, emphasized the significance of the partnership. “This diplomatic milestone reflects Nigeria’s continued pursuit of strategic partnerships across the globe. We welcome Saint Lucia as a valued partner in advancing shared objectives in trade, education, climate resilience, and cultural exchange.”
Saint Lucia’s Minister for External Affairs, Hon. Alanna James, lauded the agreement as “a symbol of our dedication to South-South cooperation and our desire to broaden engagement with African nations in areas including tourism, renewable energy, and the creative economy.”
The establishment of diplomatic relations is expected to open new doors for collaboration in multilateral forums such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States.
Both governments expressed optimism for future engagements, including high-level visits and the possible establishment of non-resident embassies to further deepen ties.
