The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially closed its case in the ongoing terrorism and treason trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The announcement was made today before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Lead prosecution counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, declared the case closed following the testimony and cross-examination of the fifth and final prosecution witness, identified only as “EEE” for security reasons. Awomolo stated that the government had presented sufficient evidence—including witness testimonies and broadcast materials—to support the charges brought against the defendant.
“In view of the avalanche of evidence tendered before this honorable court, we are satisfied that we have made our case. I therefore close the case,” Awomolo told the court.
In response, lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, informed the court of the defence’s intention to file a no-case submission. This legal move argues that the prosecution has failed to establish a prima facie case, and that the defendant has no case to answer under the law.
