After months of anticipation and growing concern, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to Benue State have welcomed the recent commencement of state allowance payments by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration. The move follows an extended period—reportedly up to 11 months—during which corps members had not received the promised stipends, prompting widespread frustration and calls for action.

Governor Alia, during the 2024 Batch A orientation course at the NYSC Camp in Wannune, Tarka LGA, announced the implementation of a new allowance structure: ₦15,000 monthly for corps members and ₦100,000 for corps doctors. The announcement was met with cautious optimism, as many corps members expressed relief that their concerns were finally being addressed.

“This is a step in the right direction,” said one corps member serving in Makurdi. “We’ve been patient, but it’s been tough surviving without the state allowance. We hope this isn’t just a one-time gesture.”

The state government has reiterated its commitment to regular disbursement going forward, with officials emphasizing that the welfare and security of corps members remain a top priority. The administration also pledged improvements to camp infrastructure and support for healthcare services through incentives for medical corps personnel.

While the recent payments have eased tensions, some corps members are still seeking clarity on whether arrears for the unpaid months will be settled. Advocacy groups and NYSC stakeholders have urged the government to provide a transparent timeline for any outstanding payments.
