The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has called on the National Assembly to initiate a constitutional amendment removing the President's unilateral power to appoint critical national officers, including the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

During a press briefing at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, the National Chairman of the ADP, [insert name if available], described the current appointment process as “politically skewed” and a threat to the independence and impartiality of key democratic institutions.

“To preserve public trust and the integrity of our elections and national security apparatus, Nigeria must depoliticize the appointment process for these offices,” the ADP leader stated.

The party urged lawmakers to consider models from other democracies where independent commissions, legislative confirmation, or multiparty consensus drive the selection of electoral and policing leadership, instead of presidential fiat.

The ADP maintains that these reforms are essential to strengthen democracy, guarantee electoral fairness, and ensure public confidence in law enforcement agencies.

The party announced plans to engage civil society groups, legal experts, and fellow political parties to build a unified front for legislative action. A formal petition will be submitted to the Senate and House Committees on Constitutional Review.
