Thousands of women from across Rivers State united today in a peaceful protest against the ongoing emergency rule imposed on the state. The demonstrators, under the banner of justice and democracy, marched to the Rivers State Government House, demanding the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the restoration of democratic governance.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Bring Back Fubara,” “Save Our Democracy,” and “Obey the Rule of Law,” the women expressed their frustration over what they described as an unconstitutional imposition of military rule disguised as a state of emergency. The protest leaders emphasized that their movement transcends politics, focusing on the protection of democratic values and the future of Rivers State.
Speaking during the march, Dr. Nancy Chidi Nwankwo, a prominent leader of the protest, stated, “This is not just about Governor Fubara; it is about defending our votes, our democracy, and the sanctity of our institutions. Rivers people deserve better than this undemocratic arrangement.”
The women also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reverse the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. They urged the federal government to end the emergency rule, which they believe undermines the principles of democracy and justice.
In a passionate plea, the protesters appealed to respected Nigerians, including former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, and Goodluck Jonathan, to intervene and advocate for the restoration of democratic institutions in Rivers State.
