The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Rivers State Chapter, has announced that this year’s Workers’ Day celebration on May 1st will be marked in a low-key manner, citing growing concerns over political instability and speculations surrounding the imposition of an emergency rule in the state.

In a statement released to the press, the NLC leadership expressed deep concern over the current political climate in Rivers, which has created an atmosphere of uncertainty for workers and the general public. The Congress emphasized the need for caution and restraint during this sensitive period.

“Our decision to scale down this year’s Workers’ Day celebration is rooted in our commitment to the safety and security of our members,” said Comrade Beatrice Itubo, Chairperson of the Rivers State NLC. “We believe that a modest observance, focused on reflection and solidarity, is the most responsible course of action given the circumstances.”

The NLC stated that the low-key event will include a symbolic gathering of labour leaders and selected representatives at the state secretariat, where key issues affecting workers will still be highlighted. Themes of worker welfare, democratic stability, and respect for constitutional order will top the agenda.

While reiterating their commitment to the ideals of Workers’ Day, the Congress called on the federal and state governments to prioritize dialogue, constitutional order, and peaceful resolution of political tensions in the interest of Rivers workers and residents.
