The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at equipping 6,000 teachers nationwide with Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. This move seeks to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria by empowering educators to incorporate modern technologies into their teaching methodologies.
The training, which will be rolled out in phases, is designed to provide teachers with a comprehensive understanding of AI tools, techniques, and their applications in the classroom. This initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve the educational sector and ensure that Nigerian students are better prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.
Speaking at the launch event, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, emphasized the importance of integrating AI into the nation’s education system. "AI is rapidly reshaping industries across the globe, and it is imperative that we prepare our educators to harness these technologies to foster a dynamic and forward-thinking learning environment," he said.
The training will cover a variety of AI topics, including machine learning, data analysis, and digital literacy, with a focus on how teachers can use AI to improve lesson planning, student engagement, and assessment. Additionally, the program aims to equip teachers with the skills needed to navigate the challenges of digital learning environments, enabling them to effectively teach students in an increasingly technology-driven world.
The initiative, which is being supported by key stakeholders in the education and technology sectors, is expected to foster a new generation of teachers who are well-versed in AI and digital tools. It will also bridge the digital divide in classrooms, ensuring that students across Nigeria, regardless of location, have access to quality education that prepares them for future careers in technology and innovation.
Minister Adamu further highlighted that this initiative is a step toward achieving the government’s broader goals of digital transformation and improving the quality of education in Nigeria. He urged all participating teachers to fully embrace the training, noting that the knowledge they gain would have a lasting positive impact on their students and the education sector at large.
