The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a temporary ban on the registration of new polytechnics and monotechnics in the country for a period of one year, effective immediately. This decision, made in consultation with the Ministry of Education and relevant stakeholders, aims to streamline the nation’s technical and vocational education sector and address the growing concerns regarding the quality of education and infrastructural adequacy in existing institutions.

In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the government highlighted that the move is necessary to allow for a comprehensive evaluation and strengthening of the existing institutions. The ban is expected to provide time for the assessment of the current polytechnic and monotechnic landscape, ensuring that these institutions meet the required standards for academic excellence, infrastructure, and operational efficiency.

The Ministry of Education emphasized that the ban will also enable the government to address critical challenges faced by these institutions, including underfunding, overcrowding, and insufficient facilities. By pausing the establishment of new institutions, the government hopes to refocus efforts on improving the capacity and quality of the existing ones.

The Federal Government has assured the public that during this period, emphasis will be placed on improving the quality of education, enhancing the employability of graduates, and ensuring that polytechnics and monotechnics align with national development goals.
