Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Kari Kairesmaa, has expressed grave concerns over the actions of Simon Ekpa, a prominent separatist leader, stating that his activities were detrimental to the growing diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Finland.

Ambassador Kairesmaa met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier today, where he underscored the importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties between the two nations. However, he also highlighted that Ekpa's ongoing activities, which include promoting secessionist agendas and encouraging civil unrest, were undermining diplomatic efforts and threatening the stability that both countries have worked hard to cultivate.

“Simon Ekpa's actions and rhetoric are not only harmful to Nigeria’s internal unity but also put at risk the collaborative relationship between our two nations,” said Ambassador Kairesmaa. “Finland is committed to peaceful, constructive diplomacy, and we are deeply concerned by any efforts that may destabilize the region or hinder progress.”

Ekpa, a key figure associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been vocal in advocating for the secession of the southeast region of Nigeria, a stance that has led to violent confrontations and widespread unrest. His influence has been magnified through social media platforms, where he continues to spread divisive messages.

In response, President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria's commitment to addressing all matters affecting national security and unity, noting that the country remains focused on ensuring that any destabilizing elements are effectively handled within the framework of the law.

“While Nigeria values its international partnerships, we will not tolerate actions that threaten the sovereignty and unity of our nation,” President Tinubu affirmed. “We are working diligently to ensure peace, security, and stability, not only for our citizens but for our international allies as well.”

Ambassador Kairesmaa emphasized that Finland’s support for a united Nigeria is unwavering, but that cooperation could only be effective if mutual respect for national sovereignty and security was maintained.
