Human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately revoke the "illegal and unconstitutional" bail conditions imposed on activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and facilitate his prompt release.
In a statement issued earlier today, Falana emphasized that Sowore's continued detention and the conditions of his bail, which restrict his movement and rights, are not only unlawful but also contrary to Nigeria's constitution and international human rights standards. He accused the authorities of using Sowore's detention to stifle free expression and suppress dissent in the country.
Falana, who has consistently advocated for the protection of fundamental rights in Nigeria, stated: “The ongoing illegal detention of Omoyele Sowore and the imposition of unjust bail conditions serve no legitimate legal purpose. These actions violate the constitutional rights guaranteed to every Nigerian, including the right to personal liberty and freedom of speech.”
Sowore, a well-known critic of the Nigerian government and leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, was arrested in connection with his activism and online campaigns. Despite being granted bail by the court, the police have imposed stringent and unlawful conditions that restrict his freedom of movement, as well as his ability to fully exercise his rights under the law.
Falana urged the police to immediately comply with the court’s orders and to release Sowore unconditionally, asserting that further delay in releasing him will be an abuse of legal processes and an affront to the rule of law.
“The unlawful detention and the imposition of these excessive bail conditions are an attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy and criminalize free speech. It is imperative that the Inspector General of Police respects the law and immediately secures Sowore’s release without any further hindrances,” Falana added.
