The Campaign for Democratic Workers’ Rights (CDWR) has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing non-compliance with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strike, which began on December 1, 2024. The CDWR is calling for immediate government intervention to enforce the implementation of the newly established N70,000 national minimum wage across all states.
The NLC initiated this nationwide strike in response to widespread failure among state governments to comply with the new minimum wage directive. Despite some states announcing intentions to implement the wage, many have yet to take concrete action, leaving workers in a precarious financial situation. The CDWR emphasizes that empty promises and verbal commitments from state officials are insufficient and unacceptable.
“Workers across Nigeria are suffering under the weight of economic hardship exacerbated by inflation and stagnant wages,” said a spokesperson for the CDWR. “It is imperative that state governments fulfill their obligations and ensure that all workers receive the N70,000 minimum wage without further delay.”
The CDWR highlights that several states have publicly declared their intention to comply but have failed to provide evidence of actual payments. For instance, while Cross River State announced plans to implement the new wage, there has been no follow-through on payments or negotiations. Similarly, other states like Enugu and Ebonyi have made announcements without actualizing them.
“The time for talk is over; it is time for action,” the spokesperson added. “The CDWR stands in solidarity with the NLC and all workers demanding their rights. We will not rest until every worker receives what they are owed.”
