In response to rising electricity costs affecting households across the nation, President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to adopt better energy management practices. During a recent media chat at his residence, the President emphasized the importance of energy conservation, stating, “It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage.”

The President’s remarks come amid significant increases in energy tariffs and fuel prices since his administration took office in May 2023. The removal of the petrol subsidy has led to petrol prices soaring from less than ₦200 per litre to over ₦1,100 in some regions, while electricity tariffs have also seen substantial hikes. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission recently raised rates for customers classified under Band A from ₦66 per kilowatt-hour to ₦225.

President Tinubu dismissed calls for price control measures, asserting that the government is focused on improving market supply rather than imposing artificial price ceilings. He reiterated his commitment to reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and enhancing energy efficiency across Nigeria.
