The Presidency has firmly rebutted recent claims made by Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah, asserting that President Bola Tinubu is not an "accidental leader" but a prepared reformer committed to transforming Nigeria.
In a statement issued by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency emphasized that President Tinubu has consistently demonstrated readiness for the responsibilities of his office. Onanuga stated, "He (Tinubu) is not an accidental leader; he is doing his best to ensure that we have a turnaround in this country."
Bishop Kukah, during a keynote address at the unveiling of the new Start-Rite School building in Abuja, characterized many of Nigeria's leaders, including President Tinubu, as having ascended to power through unforeseen circumstances rather than through preparation or capability. He highlighted a historical pattern in Nigeria's leadership where successive leaders have often been thrust into power unexpectedly.
In response, Onanuga challenged Kukah’s assertions, questioning whether the President appears to fit the description of an accidental leader. He reiterated that Tinubu has actively prepared for his role and is engaged in significant reforms across various sectors. "Because he prepared himself for the office, he is doing a lot of reform," Onanuga added.
The Presidential spokesman pointed out that reforms require time and patience. He stated, “Reforms are not done in quick fixes; it takes time for you to turn things around.” He noted that President Tinubu has initiated substantial changes in areas such as taxation and the oil sector, aiming to improve Nigeria's economic landscape.
Onanuga also acknowledged that while reforms may cause temporary hardships for some citizens, the administration is committed to providing support to those affected. "He is doing everything possible to ensure that those who are affected are also helped so that they will not be left behind," he said.
