The Ogun State Government, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, is reaffirming its commitment to tackling the rising cost of food items in the state. In a recent meeting with market leaders, Governor Abiodun announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at making essential foodstuffs more affordable for all residents.
As part of this initiative, the state government will launch a rebranded entity known as the Gateway Trading Company, which will focus on bulk purchasing of essential food items.
This new agency is set to operate across the four zones of Ogun State and aims to sell food products at prices significantly lower than those found in local markets. Governor Abiodun stated, “Gateway Trading will now assist in bringing food items to our teeming public at prices that will be significantly below what they can obtain when they go to the market themselves.”
In addition to the establishment of the Gateway Trading Company, the governor announced a ban on all forms of illegal market levies. This includes various taxes that have been imposed on market traders, which have contributed to inflated prices for consumers. The only levies that will be permitted are those related to market development and environmental upkeep, ensuring transparency and accountability in their collection.
To further support market traders and farmers, the Ogun State Government is implementing a Market Enforcement Task Force. This task force will operate in all 20 local government areas and is tasked with eliminating coercion and intimidation practices that have plagued market operations. Governor Abiodun emphasized that anyone caught engaging in illegal activities or extorting money from traders would face severe legal consequences.
Recognizing the critical role of farmers in ensuring food security, the state government plans to provide low-interest loans, grants, and agricultural implements to support local farmers. The forthcoming Ogun Empowerment Scheme is designed specifically for this purpose, targeting financial assistance towards market women and informal sector workers.
Governor Abiodun also highlighted the need for improved waste management in markets across Ogun State. He directed relevant agencies to ensure regular waste collection and maintain cleanliness in market environments.
In her remarks, Chief Yemisi Abass, Iyaloja General of Ogun State, praised the governor for his proactive approach in engaging with market leaders and addressing their concerns. She expressed optimism about the positive impact these measures will have on both traders and consumers.
