Concerns are mounting within the Nigerian military following reports that Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has been secretly flown abroad by family members to seek medical attention. This revelation comes amid his prolonged absence from official duties, which has raised eyebrows among top military officials.

Sources within the military have confirmed that General Lagbaja, who was appointed on June 19, 2023, has not been seen at the Nigerian Army Headquarters or any military functions for over three weeks. His last public appearance was on September 10, 2024, during the inauguration of civil-military cooperation projects in Osun State.

Since then, he has missed significant events, including the combined passing-out parade at the Nigerian Defence Academy on September 28 and the Army War College Nigeria Course graduation dinner on October 2.

“His absence is unusual for someone in his position,” stated a senior officer. “We haven’t seen his official vehicle at his designated parking space for weeks. It’s concerning.” Another officer corroborated this sentiment, noting that many Major Generals are feeling uncertain about their leadership roles in Lagbaja's absence.

Reports suggest that family members arranged for Lagbaja's transport abroad due to serious health concerns. “He is seriously sick and was taken to the hospital,” said a close associate. “His family decided it was best to move him out of the country for treatment.”

The situation has sparked discussions among military personnel about the need for leadership continuity during this critical time. “Anyone can fall ill, but someone needs to be in charge,” remarked another officer who expressed well wishes for Lagbaja’s recovery.

As this story develops, many await an official statement from military authorities to clarify General Lagbaja's health status and future role within the Nigerian Army.
