Tragedy struck at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library's Zoological Garden on Saturday when a lion attacked and killed a 35-year-old lion handler, Babaji Daule. The incident occurred as Daule approached the lion's enclosure to feed the animal, having neglected to secure the locks and barricades beforehand.

According to the Ogun State Police Command, this oversight allowed the lion to escape and subsequently attack Daule, inflicting severe injuries to his neck. Despite immediate action taken by security personnel, who shot the lion to release its grip on the handler, it was too late. Daule succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

The police spokesman, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the victim's body was transported to Ijaye General Hospital for autopsy and further examination. This incident marks a grim reminder of the inherent dangers faced by animal handlers in zoological settings.

"This tragic event underscores the critical importance of safety protocols in animal care," stated Odutola. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Babaji Daule during this difficult time."

This incident is particularly poignant as it follows a similar occurrence earlier this year at another Nigerian zoo, where a veterinary technologist was killed by a lion under comparable circumstances.

The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library has yet to release an official statement regarding this incident or any measures that will be implemented to enhance safety protocols moving forward.
