The Benue State Police Command has launched an intensive search-and-rescue operation following the abduction of 12 individuals, including the driver of a Benue Links transport bus, along the Otukpo-Otukpa-Enugu highway in Okpokwu Local Government Area.

The victims, who were en route from Abeokuta to Makurdi, were intercepted by armed assailants near Eke Elengbecho around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 22. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers robbed the passengers before forcing them into the surrounding forest. One passenger managed to escape and reported the incident to the Eke Police Station.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force has deployed aerial surveillance drones and reinforced ground operations with tactical teams, military personnel, and the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards. The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, has personally relocated to the area to oversee the ongoing efforts.

“We are utilizing every available resource, including drone technology, to locate and safely rescue the abducted individuals,” said SP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command. “Our teams are combing the area and remain committed to bringing the victims home safely.”

Benue Links, the state-owned transport company, confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern for the safety of the passengers. “We are working closely with security agencies and remain hopeful for a swift resolution,” said Johnson Daniel, the company’s Information Officer.
