In a significant step toward fostering harmony and national unity, the Nigerian Army has successfully mediated a landmark peace accord between the Fulani and Tiv communities in Taraba State. The accord, signed at a formal ceremony in Jalingo, marks a turning point in efforts to resolve longstanding inter-communal tensions in the region.
The peace initiative, led by the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, brought together traditional leaders, community representatives, youth groups, and local government officials from both ethnic communities under one roof. After weeks of dialogue, consultation, and confidence-building measures, the two parties agreed to cease hostilities, respect territorial boundaries, and pursue peaceful conflict resolution.
Speaking at the event, the Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, commended the communities for their commitment to dialogue and reconciliation. “This accord is a testament to what we can achieve when we choose peace over conflict. The Nigerian Army remains a neutral arbiter and will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure lasting peace in Taraba State and beyond,” he said.
Traditional rulers from both communities praised the Army’s role in facilitating the process and emphasized the importance of inter-ethnic unity for national development. The accord outlines mechanisms for joint community patrols, regular peace meetings, and the establishment of local conflict resolution committees.
