In a candid and unprecedented statement, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State, revealed that despite being fully aware of the issues surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s controversial Chicago certificate case, he and other political allies continued to support Tinubu’s candidacy during the 2023 presidential election. However, El-Rufai expressed regret over Tinubu’s performance as President, claiming that the leadership has failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

Speaking at a public forum earlier today, El-Rufai explained that the knowledge of Tinubu’s academic certificate issues from his time at Chicago State University was not a hidden secret within the political circles. “We were fully aware of the controversies surrounding his certificate, but we believed that he still represented the best chance for Nigeria to move forward,” El-Rufai stated. “We backed him because we felt his leadership could bring about the changes Nigeria desperately needed.”

Despite their initial backing, El-Rufai’s tone shifted as he criticized the administration's handling of key national issues. He expressed disappointment over the economic and security challenges that have intensified since Tinubu took office. “Nigeria’s problems are deep and complex, but the failure to address them swiftly and effectively has resulted in widespread frustration across the country,” El-Rufai added.

El-Rufai, known for his outspoken nature, noted that the failure of Tinubu's government to deliver on key promises, particularly in terms of economic revitalization and security, has tarnished the credibility of the current administration. He pointed out that many Nigerians have become disillusioned, as the hopes that they had placed in Tinubu’s leadership have yet to be realized.

While acknowledging the imperfections of any political leader, El-Rufai emphasized that the continuous disregard for accountability and governance would only further alienate the people from the government. “We knew the risks when we supported him, but we had hopes for a transformative presidency. However, it is clear now that the leadership has not met the expectations of the Nigerian people,” he said.
