In a decisive move to ensure the timely completion of critical infrastructure projects, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has issued a stern ultimatum to contractors engaged in the Federal Government's emergency projects. During a recent meeting held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, Umahi emphasized that contractors must meet their project deadlines or risk termination of their contracts.
The Minister's warning comes in light of significant delays affecting approximately 260 emergency projects aimed at restoring vital federal roads across the nation. Despite the urgency of these projects, it has been reported that around 37 contractors have made little to no progress since their contracts were awarded.
Umahi stated, "Contractors must mobilize effectively to their respective sites by July 10, 2024. Failure to do so will result in immediate contract termination." He further clarified that any contractor whose project has remained incomplete for over three months must seek formal approval for an extension from the Federal Ministry of Works.
This ultimatum is part of the government's broader strategy to enhance accountability and ensure that public funds are utilized effectively. The Minister reiterated that meeting project deadlines is not just a contractual obligation but a responsibility towards the Nigerian people who rely on these essential services.
Umahi's directive aligns with standard practices in contract management, where timely performance is critical. He noted that the government would not tolerate breaches of contract terms and urged all contractors to adhere strictly to their obligations.
