The Federal Government of Nigeria is pleased to announce the successful recovery of $52.88 million in assets linked to former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke. This significant recovery comes as part of ongoing efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability in the management of public resources.
The repatriated funds were returned by the United States government following a memorandum of understanding between the two nations aimed at addressing issues of financial misconduct and asset recovery. This operation underscores the commitment of both governments to work collaboratively in the fight against corruption and the repatriation of stolen assets.
Diezani Alison-Madueke served as Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Resources from 2010 to 2015 and has been embroiled in various allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement. The recovered assets represent a crucial step towards restoring public trust and demonstrating the Nigerian government's resolve to hold accountable those who have misappropriated public funds.
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for their cooperation in this matter. "This recovery is a testament to our unwavering commitment to transparency and integrity in governance. We will continue to pursue all avenues for recovering assets that rightfully belong to the Nigerian people," he stated.
The Nigerian government has implemented several reforms aimed at enhancing asset recovery processes, including strengthening legal frameworks and increasing collaboration with international partners. This recovery aligns with the broader objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to tackle corruption and improve economic stability.
