The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Bauchi State University (BSU) has officially commenced an indefinite strike following unresolved issues regarding unpaid allowances and other longstanding grievances.
In a statement issued by the local chapter of ASUU, the union emphasized that the strike action was prompted by the failure of the university administration and the government to meet the financial obligations owed to the academic staff. These include outstanding allowances that have been pending for several months, which have severely impacted the welfare of university lecturers and academic staff.
The strike has paralyzed academic activities across the institution, as lectures, examinations, and other essential services have been suspended indefinitely. ASUU's decision to take this drastic step was made after repeated attempts at negotiation with the university management and government authorities yielded no significant outcomes.
"The refusal of the university management and government to settle the arrears of allowances, despite numerous promises, has left us with no choice but to embark on this strike action," Chairperson of ASUU Bauchi. "Our members are committed to ensuring that their welfare is prioritized, and this strike will continue until the issues are addressed."
The union has called on the federal and state governments to immediately intervene to resolve the matter and ensure the well-being of academic staff. ASUU also urged students and the public to understand the necessity of this action, which it claims is crucial to securing a better future for both the institution and its faculty members.
